Black in the West: Neko Upson, A Midwife
Neko Upson is a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) who grew up in Curtis Park and currently manages the Certified Nurse Midwife practice at Saint Joseph Hospital. Looking back on her journey up to this point, Upson stated that “God puts people in your life, sometimes they don’t know what a difference they made.” Upson came from humble beginnings, it was the people that she met along the way that made her career possible. Upson shares her story of growing up in the Curtis Park projects and returning to provide healthcare to women in the neighborhood for nearly 20 years.
Neal Walia: Why Representation Matters for Congressional District One
Representation matters. Our lived experiences; our history, and our neighborhoods shape our understanding of our needs and priorities as a community. In the history of our state, a person of color has never represented our district in our nation’s capital. The systems of white supremacy that have isolated our district to experiencing a singular demographic of representation are generating dire consequences for the working class and BIPOC communities residing in our district. Denverites are currently feeling the full weight of the American economy, not to mention the repercussions of a sitting incumbent who is rarely present and disconnected from the struggles of her constituents. The need for change is urgent. And for the first time in a long time, we have a real opportunity to do that this year in the June 28th Democratic Primary.

Unique corner store that celebrates local history set to open in Five Points
Melody Market will open in mid-April, providing residents and those who work in Five Points a convenient – and unique – shopping experience. The store will be located at 2950 N. Washington Street, in the heart of one of Denver’s most historic neighborhoods, and Melody Market will reflect that history.
Black in the West: Brien Hollowell, a photographer
Brien Hollowell is a Colorado born African-American photographer currently exhibiting in Five Points. His newest exhibit captures landmarks and meaningful places in Denver and the 2020 George Floyd Protest, all in black-and-white to convey his artistic endeavor to create a memoir. This story is the first Five Points Atlas edition of Black in the West.
