BLVCMRKT Boutique to Celebrate 3 Years
On September 18th, BLVCMRKT Boutique (pronounced ‘black market’) will be hosting an event in Denver’s Five Points neighborhood to mark their 3-year anniversary as a business. BLVCMRKT Boutique is a Black-owned, local clothing brand with a mission to create a space for sustainable fashion alternatives through art & storytelling.
LGBTQIA+ YOUTHS OF COLOR JOIN JUNETEENTH’S BLACK PRIDE WITH SERIES OF CELEBRATIONS
YouthSeen, an organization that supports the mental health and safety of LGBTQIA+ youths of color, hosts their first Juneteenth Black Pride event with a weekend of FREE festivities.*
Yes, Juneteenth will be in-person this year
We can confirm that Juneteenth will return with a mix of virtual and in-person events and the festival will have a much larger footprint than years prior. Building on the concept of “spread-out-JMF '' with different zones for COVID-compliance, this year's festival will have multiple areas throughout Five Points rather than solely activating the central blocks of the Welton Street Business Corridor. Patrons will experience the traditional Parade, Live Music and Entertainment, Merchants and Vendors as well as a few notable additional experiences.
Black Chess Club and Tournament Series, Endgame Association, created through Activism
Birthed out of the 2020 summer protests, Endgame Association was created with a primary mission to inspire the Black community to come together for strategic community gatherings bringing together artists, activists, creatives, civil minded people, educators and entrepreneurs. At no charge, entrepreneurs can ‘pop-up’ and sell their merchandise at these events to make money, and get exposure and Chess is at the center of it all.
April Welton Street Art Walk
Join us on the 3rd Wednesday of the month from 4-8pm for the Welton St. Art Walk presented by Five Points Atlas & Vibe Palace. This month’s celebration, on April 21st will feature the work of Gabby Recny, Yazz Atmore, Nicole Moore-Abeyta & Kaylee Bender. These local artists will be featured in the following Welton businesses: Welton St. Cafe, Get Busy Living, Coffee on the Point & On Point Beauty Bar. The artwork will remain in the businesses for a month. Visit the historic corridor for something exciting during the middle of the week and to engage with the community. This is a free event & all ages are welcome.
Granny Dances to a Holiday Drum from Cleo Parker Robinson Dance returns to Five Points virtually
While COVID-19 has reduced the scale of performances and services offered at Cleo Parker Robinson, their much anticipated holiday staple, Granny Dances to a Holiday Drum, will still go on—but this year, the performance will be digital.
Come down to Five Points for the Holiday Stroll
With Thanksgiving behind us, many families are officially getting into the holiday spirit. Luckily, this Saturday, December 5th, there is a great event happening right here in Five Points to help usher in the season. The Five Points Holiday Stroll is this Saturday from 3 to 6 pm and will offer families the opportunity to participate in classic holiday traditions like kinara making for Kwanzaa as well as shop and support local businesses.
ICYMI: Denver had a Black Restaurant week last week
This Black Restaurant Week featured the restaurants: KONJO, Whittier Cafe, Saucy’s Southern (Food Truck), Mimosas, Boney’s and MBP. The week featured notable DJs Squizzy Taylor, KDJ Above, Simone Says, Hollywood Cook, KScott and Hex Kitten. The week ended with a community service opportunity with the local Feed the Streets initiative which provides meals to the homeless.
BeWokeVote, a voter homecoming in Five Points
The BeWokeVote event was a breath of fresh air for people given this year's tribulations. Norman Harris and his team did a great job organizing the event. All people had to do was show up and they would be taken care of. Fathima of Welton Street Cafe, gave out her famous jerk chicken for free and music from local DJ, KDJ Above, filled the streets.
